Spreyton Woods to Charlton

Headed off in the full sun and took a wrong turn which turned out to be a very hilly mistake and a steep couple of miles to get back to where I nearly started, very pretty though. I then had a very steep climb up to and through Hollacombe (where I actually had to push my bike; and I NEVER push my bike!).

The small road goes through a really cool trench in the valley and comes out with a lovely view of Crediton. I stopped in Crediton and bought sandwiches for lunch. I am struggling today, I think the head wind and hills are getting to me, I certainly do need to try and rest on my fourth day but I want to get home to Bristol in one go at this point and have a rest day when I get there.

I took the A3072 out of Crediton and took steep and rolling country lanes through Shobrooke and Thorverton to Upexe along the A396 for a 1/4 mile and east to Silverton, going slow for the ducks crossing and going over the M5 at Hele and heading north on the B3181 into and through Collumpton.

I stopped for tea and cake after Willand and then jumped on Sustrans NCN 3 to the Grand Western Canal and then back to the hills at Beacon Hill through Greenham through to Langford Budville where I had a wild mushroom rissotto at a very nice pub.

I stayed on the NCN 3 to Taunton and then had to put my lights on before cycling through Taunton and taking the gamble of cycling along the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, hoping it wouldn’t be too dodgy and that it would stay light long enough to find a camp spot.

It got dark and I continued until the moonlight stopped giving enough light and I had to come off at Charlton and I simply put my inner tent on the floor, my thermarest and sleeping bag on top of it with the outer tent draped over me and led down and watched the stars for five minutes before going to sleep, well past midnight and extremely tired!
