I cycled to Osborne Clarke arriving at 9.30 where I was interviewed by a lady from Orchard 106 radio which was a surprise.
After answering “20 questions” from my colleagues, having some photos taken by Macmillan and Mike and lots of encouragement from my friends I had a quick cuppa with Becca and hit the road.
On my way up Whiteladies to the Downs I bumped into Si – I haven’t seen him in years so that was a blast from the past! I had a cuppa with Topher on the Downs and then headed along Henbury Road to Aust and over the Severn Bridge.
I took the NCN 4 alongside the A466 to Chepstow then got onto the A466 and stopped in Tintern for a honeycombe icecream, leaving about 2.30.
I did a straight run to Monmouth in great weather and some fantastic cycling – I took a gamble that the road wouldn’t be too busy with traffic and it paid off!
I went straight through Monmouth and then took country lanes through Osbaston over Tregate Bridge and north on the B4347 to Skenfrith (where I had to walk the bike for a short stretch).
At Skenfrith I popped into a pub but they weren’t serving food until 7pm, a lady said for me to try the Angel at Grosmont and a man chucked me a fiver for the pot, also offering me a field to camp in but I wanted to do some more miles.
After another super steep climb into Grosmont I felt I deserved my yummy pork, apple and cider bangers with mash at the Angel.
With a full belly I cycled over to Kentchurch and stopped at The Bridge and asked if there was a campsite and lo and behold they did free camping in the field next to the pub – perfect! Fred, a fellow camper made me a cup of coffee whilst I set up camp and I wrote my journal.
They had a whip round in the pub, everyone was very friendly and I wasn’t allowed to buy my own beer.
